How to Set up Google Search Console

Hey, everyone. Today I’m going to show you how to set up Google Search Console for your website. Google Search Console is a free service offered by Google. Anyone with a website should be using it, regardless of the CMS they are using. Google search console can be implemented on all major CMS like Magento, WordPress, Shopify and Prestashop.  It will help you to monitor and maintain your website’s presence in Google search results. It can help you understand how Google views your site and optimize its performance in search results. With Google Search Console, you will also be able to resolve any spam issues, monitor your website’s traffic, see which websites are linking to yours, see how your mobile site is performing for visitors searching on a mobile phone, and so much more. It really provides you with a wealth of information.

From generalist to specialist, from newbie to advanced, Search Console can really help you. Now just to clarify, it was previously called Google Webmaster Tools, but it is now called Google Search Console. So, we want to go to From there, we’re going to click here on Search Console. If we haven’t set up a website yet, we are presented with this window. We can enter our website in here. If you’re not presented with this window, on the top left-hand side we can click on these three little lines to get the dropdown, and then we want to click on ‘Add Property’. We then enter our website in here and continue.

Now, if you’re already a verified owner, you’ll be met with this auto verified message. You can then go to ‘Property’, and as you can see, I’m a delegated owner. If you’re not a delegated owner, you’ll be met with a screen similar to this one where you can choose one of five ways to verify ownership. You can upload an HTML file to the backend of your website. Note that you have to leave this file there so that you can stay verified, then you have HTML tags so you can add a meta tag to your site’s home page. This is the easiest way to verify ownership, which I’ll show you how to do in a minute. You can also verify via Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and Domain Name Provider.

To verify via an HTML tag, we’re going to click on the dropdown and copy this meta tag. We don’t need the entire meta tag, and just need to copy what’s between the hyphens. We’ll then go to our website’s dashboard, and on the bottom left, click on the ‘SEO plugin’. If you’re not sure on how to install this SEO plugin, check out our previous video where we show you how to install an SEO plugin. Now, click on ‘Webmaster Tools’. We then want to paste our verification code here where it says ‘Google Verification Code’ and click ‘Save Changes’. As you can see at the top here, it now says ‘Setting Saved’.

We can head back to the Search Console area and we want to click ‘Verify Now’. Google will go through and if it sees the code, then you have been verified. Note that it may take a couple of days for your performance data to show up on Google Search Console. Just check back in a couple of days and it should then be there.
