How to Submit a Sitemap to Google

Script:

Hey everyone. Today I’m going to talk you through how to submit a sitemap to Google. The purpose of a sitemap is to help visitors and search engine bots find pages on the website. Now without further ado, let’s get into submitting a sitemap.

Firstly, we want to go to our homepage of Google Webmaster Tools. We then click on our website. And then, on the left-hand side, we want to click on ‘Crawl’. And from the drop downs, we want to click on sitemaps. We are then presented with this page. You see straight away if you’re sitemap is already added to search console. If it isn’t, then you just want to click on the ‘add/test’ sitemap button, which you’ll see on the top right-hand side. Now, if you need to create a WordPress sitemap, I can show you how to do this now.

If you need to add a sitemap to your WordPress website, first you need to install and activate WordPress SEO by Yoast plugin. If you’re not sure on how to do this, check out our previous video on how to install an SEO plugin. From the left-hand side, we want to click on SEO and then general and then on the top there, we want to click on features. Now, if we scroll down, we will see XML sitemaps.

We want to make sure it’s switched on, but to get our exact XML sitemap, we want to click on see the XML sitemap. So I’m going to click on that now. And then we’re shown our four sitemaps. Yoast SEO creates an XML sitemap for your website automatically. To show you how to submit a sitemap, I’m gonna copy the first link.

And then, going back to your Webmaster Tools, I’m going to go add test sitemap and paste our link in here. Our URL is already entered, so I’m just going to enter the last part in. I’m then going to click test. We can then view our test result. We can see how many pages we’ve submitted and how many images, 95. And the good news is, there are no errors found.

To submit your sitemap to Google, you will enter it here and click submit. Google then tells us it has been submitted. We can then refresh the page. On the top right-hand side, we can go to the new report. I’m gonna click there.  Over here, we can see all of our submitted sitemaps. The ideal status we’re looking for is ‘success’. This is the result we want, as it means that our sitemap was successfully loaded and processed and it will have contained all our URLs for queuing and crawling.

Google Webmaster Tools make it really easy to submit sitemaps. Using sitemaps can also improve the tracking of your content and error reporting. Thank you guys for watching.
